Abstract

Research into the use of natural products to control agricultural pests has been increasing, and essential oils stand out, produced through the secondary metabolism of plants and rich in terpenoid compounds with insecticidal action. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the insecticidal and antifeedant potential of the essential oil of Pluchea sagittalis against Spodoptera frugiperda, one of the major pests of maize crops, with collection of botanical material in the Pantanal of Miranda, Mato Grosso do Sul. Chemical composition was determined by Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry, identifying 43 constituents and corresponding to 99.9% of the total oil composition. The predominant constituents were 1,8-cineole (29.3%), α-pinene (16.3%), β-pinene (15.5%) and camphor (13.9%). The bioassays performed included Acute Topical Toxicity indicating LD₅₀ of 0.32 µL/insect and an LD₉₀ of 0.45 µL/insect (Lethal Dose), as well as an LC₅₀ of 0.67 µL/cm² and an LC₉₀ of 1.05 µL/cm² (Lethal Concentration). In the no-choice antifeedant test, the Deterrence Coefficient was within the scale of weak deterrence, whereas in the choice test, weak to moderate deterrence. The essential oil showed insecticidal and phagoinhibitory potential, demonstrating its potential use.
