Abstract

This study aimed to understand the family's day-to-day challenges in caring for children with autism spectrum disorder. Qualitative research was conducted with parents of children with autism spectrum disorder followed in a Psychosocial Care Center through a focus group and content analysis. The family's day-to-day challenges in child care permeate the understanding of the disorder, weaknesses related to access to information, socialization/communication, and quality of care/treatment in health and education services. For humanized and comprehensive care for children, it is important to have access to information for parents and relatives, strengthening actions that minimize the prejudices, discrimination, and social isolation that family members face in the face of diagnosis.
