Abstract

Aquatic insects represent about 3% of Hexapoda diversity, constituting 90% of the fauna in freshwater environments. In addition to being fundamental to trophic chains, they serve as excellent bioindicators of freshwater ecosystems.  The São João stream plays a crucial role in the municipality of Porto Nacional, supplying water to the local population and rural residents who use this source for crop irrigation. However, the aquatic biodiversity of this drainage system remains unknown.  This study provides novel information on the local entomofauna, contributing data on insect diversity for the state of Tocantins. A survey of aquatic insect fauna was conducted across four periods (early dry season, dry season, early rainy season, and full rainy season) to sample the taxon richness of the area.  Thus, this study presents a pictorial key for identifying the aquatic and semi-aquatic entomofauna of the São João stream (RSJ), Porto Nacional, which comprises a richness of nine orders (Coleoptera, Diptera, Ephemeroptera, Hemiptera, Lepidoptera, Megaloptera, Odonata, Plecoptera and Trichoptera) and 40 families.
