Abstract

A child's illness affects the entire family, triggering moments of stress and generating difficulties and despair. In this scenario, the support of the health team and the use of strategies that seek to alleviate the child's suffering are essential for the effective provision of care. The use of play is one of the ways that health professionals can use to alleviate suffering and provide an improvement in the clinical condition of pediatric patients. In this study, we seek to understand the perception of professionals about the importance of hospital recreation and leisure spaces in the context of the process of humanization and recovery of patients. This is an exploratory, descriptive study with a qualitative approach. Nurses who work in the hospital unit and develop care activities participated in the research. Data collection was carried out through a telephone interview, with a semi-structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed based on Content Analysis with regard to pre-analysis, exploration of the material and treatment of the results. Two categories emerged from the study, the first entitled “Hospital recreation and leisure: professionals’ perception” and the second “Tools for playful development in hospitals”. According to the professionals’ statements, they understand the importance of children’s recreation spaces as strategies to improve the hospital environment and that this type of approach can be accompanied by the use of therapeutic toys, which are also seen as a way to directly involve these children in their treatment. Finally, we showed that playfulness and the act of playing are decisive for the recovery of pediatric patients in relation to their physical, mental and emotional state.
