Abstract

The gender and social division of labor, which separates productive and reproductive tasks, establishes hierarchies that favor male labor. To this end, this study aims to understand local development strategies through the inclusion of rural women in the economy. The justification for this problem is due to the limited research on the role of rural women as economic agents. The study is characterized by being qualitative and is a bibliographic review of recent years on the relationship of rural women with the local economy. The main results were that the gender and social division of labor is a characteristic rooted in the social structure that defines the roles attributed to men and women in different spheres of life that perpetuate stereotypes and limit women's opportunities in various sectors, especially in rural areas. Therefore, it can be inferred that the gender and social division of labor, especially in rural areas, represents a deep and persistent challenge that permeates social structures in many parts of the world, which makes it important to reflect on the achievements and challenges regarding the participation of rural women in the local economy.
