Abstract

Traumatic injuries due to collisions are a public health problem in Brazil, and are one of the main causes of mortality in the country. The study aimed to analyze traumatic injuries due to collisions in the Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU) of a capital city in northeastern Brazil. This was a retrospective study of documentary analysis using data from the individual medical regulation record. A total of 1,257 telephone calls were identified, which generated 1,058 (84.2%) calls. Of these, 478 (38%) were related to collisions between cars and motorcycles (67.6%). There was a prevalence of single victims (32.8%), males (62.1%), ages between 20 and 39 years (55.4%), attended by basic support (82.6%), and a team with a nursing technician and driver (78.2%). The average time between the service notification and the ambulance departure was less than 1 minute (46.0%), and the average arrival time at the location and destination was 20 minutes. The most frequent procedures were immobilization (n=237) and transportation on a long board (n=220). The main outcome was referral of victims to hospital (77.4%), with a death rate at the scene (0.6%). The findings reveal the importance of improving care protocols, training the professionals involved and implementing more effective preventive measures.
