Abstract

Throughout the growth of humanity, cities were created that over the centuries began to develop and expand. However, this progress was accompanied by negative impacts on nature. The present study aimed to carry out a systematic review to examine the effectiveness and relevance of bioindicators in assessing environmental quality and monitoring ecosystems, aiming to provide a comprehensive analysis on the subject. Therefore, we sought to gather and analyze some works available electronically, using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses – PRISMA methodology as a reference. 45 works were analyzed on the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and Google Scholar platforms. From this perspective, the qualitative choice of works took place through reading the title and abstract, and after applying the exclusion and inclusion criteria, 10 of these works remained. These results reflect the breadth and depth of the research carried out, as well as the criteria applied in the selection of works for the review. Research plays a fundamental role in filling knowledge gaps about the usefulness of biological indicators in monitoring the environment.
