Abstract

The study aimed to morphophysiologically characterize a germplasm collection of Hancornia speciosa Gomes, mangaba, to understand the variability and provide support for conservation and sustainable use strategies. The germplasm collection consists of 14 genotypes from three natural populations located in the region of Porto Nacional – TO. The plants were evaluated for morphophysiological variables using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, Kruskal-Wallis test, and principal component analysis (PCA). The genotypes in the collection exhibited greater variability in terms of canopy volume, water use efficiency, photosynthetic efficiency, and CO₂ assimilation. The correlations among variables suggest structural adaptation of the plants to maximize light absorption and CO₂ assimilation, as well as an inverse relationship between transpiration rate and water use efficiency. PCA revealed high variability among the genotypes, which is advantageous for conservation. All morphophysiological variables significantly contributed to the discrimination of the genotypes. This high variability is essential for the conservation of the species, indicating significant potential for the conservation and sustainable use of mangaba's genetic resources, with promising genotypes identified for their advantageous morphophysiological characteristics.
