Abstract

The aim of this work was to monitor the water quality of the Taquaruçu Grande stream, the main source of water supply for the city of Palmas-TO. Seven points along the water body were selected for analysis. Samples were collected once during the dry season and once during the rainy season in the region. Various physical, chemical and biological parameters were analyzed, as well as some metals (Iron, Aluminium, Manganese, Chromium, Copper and Zinc.) Of the metals analyzed, Copper and Iron were found in the analyses to be above the value allowed by CONAMA 357/05 at some points. Other parameters such as chlorophyll-a, phosphorus, pH and coliforms of the E. coli group were found to be outside the standards laid down in the same legislation, which may be an indication of anthropogenic interference due to urban sprawl near the basin. The decrease in water quality as the water body passes through more populated areas was observed through the calculation of the Water Quality Index (IQA),which once again indicates that urban expansion within the Ribeirão Taquaruçu basin area should be monitored and controlled.
