Abstract

The order Diptera is one of four megadiverse orders of insects that have holometabolous development. The study of dipterans is fundamental, as their species are present in most environments and play essential roles in the ecosystem. Despite the evident relevance of the order, many Diptera are still little known, most of them lack distribution records and information about their relationships with the environment. In this sense, entomological collections are extremely important for the permanent preservation of specimens, ensuring that future generations can access and research them. The present work comes from a scientific initiation project (Pibic/CNPq), which aimed to inventory the families of Diptera deposited in the Coleção de Entomologia da Universidade Federal do Tocantins (CEUFT) and contribute to filling in gaps about the taxon. To produce the inventory, only specimens that are stored in the dry collection were counted. Identification was made at the family level, using appropriate taxonomic keys for Diptera. Until now, the CEUFT collection brings together 6,479 pinned specimens of Diptera, distributed in more than 30 families, of which 22 are new records for Tocantins. Additionally, the collection has hundreds of samples in alcohol, which are still awaiting sorting, mounting and identification processes.
