Abstract

The objective was to trace the clinical profile of infections in patients after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in a Brazilian reference center. Cross-sectional study carried out with 71 patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in a public institution in the state of Ceará. The results revealed that 36 (50.7%) were female, with a mean age of 45 ± 15 years, 22 (31%) had completed high school, 47 (66.2%) were married, 64 (90 .1%) were brown. The type of transplant was autologous (49; 59.2%), followed by allogeneic (19; 26.8%). The predominant type of infection was bacterial (71%), followed by viral (39%) and fungal (29%). The etiologic agent with the highest prevalence was Staphylococcus epidermidis. It was observed that 70% of patients had at least one hospitalization and about 15% had three or more hospitalizations. The length of stay during hospitalizations had a median of 22 days, with an interquartile range of 16 to 37 days. In addition, death was observed in 28% of cases. The type of transplant most performed was the autologous one and the patients who had leukemia as the underlying disease were the ones who most developed some type of infection.
