Abstract

This text offers spatial representations (the atlas) about the municipality of Santarém, linked to entries (the glossary) related to the Amazonian space in Pará, to demonstrate how the representation of socio-spatial and territorial dynamics, inherent in the process of late urbanization in the Amazon, can highlight socio-environmental developments. The representations were based on analyses of map collections, institutional cartographic data, free software, and online platforms, and on-field data and research bases. The result consists of the production of six entries linked to the peri-urban space of the Eastern Amazon, to environmental management and preservation, to multiscalarity and to the resistance of the peoples who inhabit these territories and their representations. The research revealed the coexistence of complex and diverse social arrangements and a rural-urban dialectic, to which issues of (re) existence are superimposed, facing environmental degradation and symbolic violence, peasant and traditional population distributed in the territory of the municipality studied, but analogous to other countless other situations of pressure by the production of commodities.
