Abstract

Aquaculture in small rural properties is extremely important, as it contributes to increasing the supply of food for the family and to the sustainable use of water resources. This study aimed to characterize this activity carried out in a family manner in the Marajó and Nordeste Pará mesoregions, in the state of Pará. The survey was targeted at 125 aquacultures, where questionnaires were applied to the owner, as well as photographic images and geographic coordinates of the aquaculture constructions of the properties. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a non-parametric test was also carried out on the water depths between the types of nurseries. Aquaculture in the two mesoregions is predominantly subsistence and occurs in extensive or semi-intensive production systems, focusing on fish farming, mainly the tambaqui species Colossoma macropomum, but in some properties the creation of shrimp macrobrachium amazonicum was found. In Marajó the activity is practiced in excavated nurseries, impoundments, natural springs and tanks, in Northeast Pará, only in excavated nurseries, impoundments and tanks. Difficulty in acquiring inputs was considered the biggest obstacle to the development of the activity. Despite the difficulties, the studied mesoregions are conducive to the development of the activity in a family way.
