Abstract

The article analyzes the issues related to urbanity in a commercial block in the projected center of the city of Palmas-TO. Urbanity is understood through the social exchanges that are established in the public space, but they need the density and diversity of the physical environment to be fully established. The investigation takes place through the analysis of the constructive density and diversity of land use in a recently established capital in Brazil. Palmas was implemented from an urban project that determined the city center, despite the absence of social construction and density history that would give content to the city center. In addition, the city suffered a premature sprawl, which resulted in the lack of consolidation of its center. The article demonstrated that the lack of continuity in the implementation of mixed-use vertical buildings in the center of Palmas compromised the conformation of an urban space that would promote urbanity.

Keywords: Urbanity. Density. Verticalization.
