Abstract

The present work aimed to analyze four samples of cosmetic clays (black, gray, green and yellow). The purpose was to determine their real composition and check if the properties advertised by the merchants on their labels are consistent with their composition. In this study, the chemical by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and mineralogical by X-ray diffraction (XRD) composition of these samples was evaluated, in addition to the physical properties of particle size distribution and specific surface area. The XFR analysis revealed that the gray and black samples have high CaO values, the yellow one has a higher SiO2 content and the green one has a greater compositional variation compared to the others. The mineral that is present in greater quantity in the black and gray samples is a carbonate. The amount of quartz in the yellow sample is greater than in the other samples. The green sample is the only one that can really be called clay; in this, muscovite and kaolinite were detected. In addition to the composition found in two of the four samples analyzed being different from that stated on its label, the presence of toxic elements in all samples can generate their accumulation in the body, leading to risks to human health.
