Abstract

Introduction: AIDS is a chronic disease, considered an advanced clinical manifestation resulting from an immunodeficiency caused by the HIV virus. Objective: Analyze the profile and trend of the AIDS epidemic in the state of Tocantins from 2008 to 2018. Methodology: Ecological time series study based on AIDS epidemiological data from the Ministry of Health. The trend analysis included regression models of Poisson by inflection points. Results: During the study period, 2,182 AIDS cases were reported in Tocantins. The cases predominated in males (62.65%), brown (70.23%), individuals between the 5th and 8th grades incomplete (20.19%) and straight (45.90%) according to the hierarchical exposure category. There was a significant increase of the incidence of AIDS in the period from 2008 to 2018 in the general population (AAPC: 3.1; CI: 0.2 to 6.0), in the male population (AAPC: 5.7; CI: 3.2 to 8.2), and  the proportion of AIDS cases due to vertical transmission (AAPC: 13.8; CI: 6.4 to 21.7). In the same period, there was a significant drop in the incidence of AIDS in children (AAPC: -7.2; CI: - 13.9 to -0.0), proportion of cases in whites (AAPC: -10.1; CI: - 15.6 to -4.2), proportion of cases in blacks (AAPC: -12.0; CI: -19.9 to -3.3), proportion of cases in browns (AAPC: -8.0; CI : -12.2 to -3.6) and proportion of cases in people with less than eight years of study (AAPC: -15.6; CI: -19.6 to -11.4). Conclusion: The increase in the incidence of AIDS in Tocantins requires integrated efforts by health services, better quality of assistance interventions, as well as the impact of social interventions to reduce the transmission of the virus and consequently of AIDS.
