Abstract

ABSTRACT

Urban gardens are related to food autonomy and social, economic and environmental factors in Brazilian cities. This study aimed to show its importance in the districts of Taquaruçu and Burutirana, from the analysis of the project - urban community gardens - which is maintained by the Secretariat of Rural Development of the Municipality of Palmas, Tocantins. This study sought to understand the socioeconomic contribution and food security of urban gardens in these locations. The exploratory and descriptive methodology applied to the study, with a qualitative approach and the technique of data collection through a semi-structured questionnaire applied to horticulturists in the studied districts, made it possible to discuss the perspectives and challenges of urban family farming and report in this article their contributions to strengthening and local development, as well as, it has been shown that the activity generates job opportunities and promotes complementary income. It can be concluded with the study that this activity contributes to the development of these locations, this because of its importance as a source of income for the families involved and for the establishment of coexistence among horticulturists, understood as a cooperative strengthening mechanism, especially for distribution of products.
