Abstract

Studying heritage in geography presumes first to conceive the landscape not only as the natural substrate, but also as human construction, impregnated with subjectivity, because as Berque (2004) affirms, the landscape is at the same time a mark, since it corresponds to the human constructions developed in the transformation of the landscape; and matrix, because it participates in the human perception schemes, corresponding to its symbolic aspects. This conception becomes essential for the study of heritage, especially materials, for geography, since these are configured as spatial forms crystallized in the landscape, and are imbued with meanings acquired over time by the different social groups that have lived with them. In this way, the present article sought to understand the cultural heritage as a spatial symbolic form, having as object of study the Casa do Português, located on João Pessoa Avenue, in Damas, a neighborhood of Fortaleza - CE, realizing the multiple meanings granted by the local residents and by those who transit the region in relation to this symbolic spatial form.
