Abstract

Brazilian oral literature comprises a wide range of form and content commonly associated with folklore. There are also narratives that tell their narrators' particular experiences with the supernatural. These narratives are not integrated into the corpus of Brazilian oral literature in its entirety, but to the specific communities of their storytellers. In this article, narratives from the interior of Maranhão will be analyzed, in which thematic structure and content can be treated under a bias of theoretical and literary studies. As theoretical support, we build on the literary scholarship of Queiroz (2011), Cascudo (2012) and Lovecraft (1973).

Keywords: Oral literature; Supernatural; Cururupu.
