Abstract

In 2023, cardiovascular disease (CVD) was the leading cause of death in Brazil among chronic non-communicable diseases. In Tocantins, the CVD mortality rate was the second highest in the North region. In view of this, this work continues a pioneering scientific initiation project focused on identifying anatomical variations in the aortic arch in cadavers necropsied at the Palmas Forensic Institute between September 2022 and August 2024. Fifty-two cadavers were analyzed, 25 from 2022/2023 and 27 from 2023/2024. Of the cases, 88.4% showed the classic anatomical pattern of the aortic arch, while six anatomical variations were identified (11.6%). The study also revealed a predominance of male cadavers, reflecting the higher incidence of violent deaths in this group. Although rare, these variations are clinically relevant in surgical and diagnostic procedures, as they can reduce risks in interventions involving the upper chest, head and neck. The study therefore highlights the need for further studies in this area, considering the importance of knowing anatomical variations in order to improve medical practices in the region.
