URBAN CONTRADICTIONS IN CAPITALIST SOCIETY: A BRIEF ANALYSIS OF "THE CITY" BY ANA FANI ALESSANDRI CARLOS

Abstract

Capitalism is largely responsible for the current urban landscape: a segregated landscape, which keeps the dominant classes in high-standard places and those who cannot afford urban land in peripheral places. The contradictions, class struggles and the development of this urban space are totally linked to this great conditioning factor, which is the power of capital. In the work "The City", Ana Fani Alessandri Carlos discusses these issues and some others that are of immense relevance to Urban Geography. The author discusses that the emergence of cities is related to migratory processes, which caused the rural exodus. However, the city was not able to accommodate all the individuals who were making this move from rural to urban. It also discusses the speed with which the landscape and relationships transform in urban space. In conclusion, it highlights the influence of historical processes in the constitution of current urban space and discusses that urban social relations must always be associated with the class struggle.
