Abstract

In the context of the overlapping of interests between quilombola territories and conservation units, we are going to discuss here the social and environmental aspects and alternative ways to reconcile these conflicts over land. In this work, we will go into the question of the various “social territories”, conceptualizing fundamental bases for understanding the contemporary challenges faced by traditional peoples and communities. That said, we will study the conflict that the quilombola community of Tambor is facing, in relation to the process of relocation and territorial dispute related to the creation of the Jaú National Park. Therefore, if we need to ask ourselves about the criteria and the position adopted by the environmental agency responsible for implementing Full Protection Units, do communities really represent a risk to local diversity? Or were they the main responsible for maintaining a balanced environment, through the promotion of sustainable management, making a conscious use of resources, precisely for obtaining in it their main means of survival? It becomes more necessary and more conscious to seek reconciliation, so that these populations can teach us and share their logic of usufruct of natural assets, providing an appreciation of these individuals. We would certainly have a lot to gain.
