SMALL CITIES IN THE CENTER-WEST PAULISTA
An analysis about canitar and águas de Santa Bárbara

The objective of this paper is to discuss and characterize, in terms of economic aspects, two small cities in the Midwest Region of São Paulo: 1) Canitar, a city linked to the sugar and alcohol sector and which has recently been transformed into a dormitory city; 2) Águas de Santa Bárbara, characterized as a hydromineral resort. The study starts from the analysis of the small city, urban scale still little studied, trying to contribute with the understanding of its different meanings. From the consultation of the bibliographic framework and research in both cities, in June 2018, consisting of interviews, photographic record and data collections, it was concluded that despite being small cities located in the same region of the state of São Paulo, they differ regarding the economic and social elements, as Canitar represents the small city inserted in capitalist agriculture and Águas de Santa Bárbara, despite guiding its economy in thermal water tourism, undergoes a process of decline in this activity, resulting in developments economic and social.
