The present work aims to investigate points of divergence and convergence between the old and new cangaço, establishing correlations between the latter and the idea of social banditry in Eric Hobsbawm's historical analysis. Throughout the text, it was found that despite carrying similar names, the new cangaço no longer presents many of the main characteristics of cangaço in its classical sense, as it was known in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Therefore, due to the loss of these characteristics, the new cangaço does not have the necessary attributes to fit in as a practice associated with social banditry, that is, that social movement capable of undermining the current social structures, being moved by class resentments and oppression.
