O PREENCHIMENTO DO SUJEITO PRONOMINAL NO AMAZONAS
UMA MUDANÇA LINGUÍSTICA EM CURSO?

Recent research (DUARTE, 1993; 1995, NUNES DE SOUZA, 2010; DUARTE, MOURÃO, SANTOS, 2012) has indicated that Brazilian Portuguese (BP) is undergoing a process of parametric change, moving away from being a null subject language and towards becoming a filled subject language. The present study aimed to verify if the same phenomenon occurs in the written Portuguese of the Amazon region in the 20th and 21st centuries. We analyzed advertisements published in the Jornal do Commercio do Amazonas (JCAM) in four temporal periods: 1904-1910; 1911-1918; 1980-1989; 2007-2013. The study was grounded in Variationist Sociolinguistics (WEINREICH, LABOV, HERZOG, 2006[1968]), according to which language research should take into account not only factors inherent to linguistic structure, but also social factors that are determinant for phenomena of linguistic variation and change. The results indicated that the omission of the pronominal subject is substantial in written data, especially when considering older texts. We also found that the speech person undergoes numerous transformations regarding the filling of the pronominal subject, especially the 2nd person which, over time, showed itself more prone to filling, a fact linked to a significant reduction in its verbal morphology. Finally, we verified that the written BP of the Amazon region also suggests strong indications of an ongoing parametric change.
